When Rachel Chavkin first saw Anais Mitchell’s folk rock musical “Hadestown” at New York Theater Workshop in 2016, she thought it was garbled and precious. But the show grew into something bigger at Edmonton and London, and at Broadway, and it’s now a rich, beautiful and warm affair. Its gloom is less imposing, its story clearer and the larger themes are more organically embedded in the music.

The lights that swayed in the workers’ chorus during the song “Wait for Me” are now part of the show’s iconography, but Chavkin didn’t envision them at first. She heard the songs as a concept album, and she thought about roadlamps flickering on and off.
